At the moment the goal seems to be to produce an LED lamp to fit in an existing fitting eg. GU10, MR16, Flourescent etc. Why are the manufacturers not getting together to define a new fixture specific to LED which can deal with the unique problems associated with keeping the junction temperature down? Or is someone already doing this and I don't know about it???

Good question!

As you say the general trend at the moment is for Lighting Manufacturers to develop either Retro-Fit Solutions (GU10, MR16 and Fluorescent replacements) with LED's or to develop a custom light fitting.

Most people including me, believe that the Retro-Fit market only has a maximum of 5 years before the market is dead. So in my opinion we should see a push to make a standard over the next 5 years.

But I don't see any of the Lighting Manufacturers going down the route of a standard light fitting yet. We have seen several attempts at making LED's interchangeable (i.e. Star Boards and connector solutions) but nothing has become a standard yet. Most lighting manufacturers want to make something unique for LED's and something that stands out from the crowd.

This is quite an interesting topic to discuss though....

Are Silica able to influence this? You have liinks to the LED manufacturers, heatsink manufacturers and optic people. How about chairing a meeting to discuss it with Seoul, Osram, Cree, Thorn, Philips etc

I will try to mention this at the next Silica Lighting meeting.

To get all of the people you mentioned in the same place may be a difficult task though. Unless it was at a trade show or some kind of industry gathering? I also have a feeling that other organisations in the industry are doing this already.
