NCV7420 - LIN Transceiver with 3.3 V or 5 V Voltage Regulator
The Local Interconnect Network (LIN) bus specification is designed to allow cost-effective communication at low data rates between automotive control devices. This bus is targeted at functions that are not time critical and usually relate to some element of passenger comfort (such as door locks, mirror adjustment, air conditioning, car seat adjustment, and sunroof control). Being implemented using a single wire in each node, it helps electronic design engineers to eliminate as much wiring as possible, reducing the cabling weight within the car and thus making it more fuel efficient.
The NCV7420 from ON Semiconductor is a fully featured LIN transceiver IC designed to interface between a LIN protocol controller and the physical bus. The transceiver is implemented in I3T technology, enabling both high-voltage analogue circuitry and digital functionality to co-exist on the same chip. The device, which is a member of the company’s in-vehicle networking (IVN) transceiver family, integrates a LIN version 2.0/2.1 physical transceiver and either a 3.3 V or a 5.0 V voltage regulator.
Supporting transmission rates of up to 20 kbit/s, it is capable of operating in harsh automotive environments and has been submitted for TS16949 qualification. It has an operating temperature range from -40 °C to +125 °C (Automotive AEC-Q100 Grade 1). A thermal shutdown facility protects the chip by switching the transmitter and the voltage regulator off when the temperature raises too much above this figure. During sleep mode the device draws only 20 µA.
