RFID Solutions for PCB Tracking

Tracking is becoming ever more crucial in the industrial world as well as in the electronic industry.

The technology for PCB (Printed Circuit Board) tracking has continually evolved from manual input to the use of linear and 2D barcodes. The next natural step of this evolution is RFID!

Implementing RFID for tracking assets has proven to be difficult in the past. The main challenges consisted of the complexity and the size requirements of the antenna needed for tags in LF and HF frequencies.

Silica now presents a new innovative solution from NXP that perfectly fits the needs of PCB Tracking. The novelty of this solution is:

  • Very small surface mount package compatible with standard pick and place machines
  • Use of the ground plane of the PCB as antenna, reducing the space requirements for the application

Features

  • Very small SMT Package
  • Based on standard UHF EPC GEN2, widely used in supply chain, logistics and asset tracking applications, no dependancy on any specific vendor for the readers.
  • Reading distance from few centimeters to 8 meters
  • Low space requirement on PCB (less than 35 mm˛)
  • No line of sight required, can read through packaging/enclosures
  • Unique ID factory programmed, can be used for authenticity check
  • User memory up to 512 bits rewritable
  • Option to lock the writing of tags with password
  • Kill feature to completely disable the tags
  • Durable as other SMT components
  • Simultaneous high speed reads (up to 200 tags per second), no need to slow down the lines
